I am city cyclist, a relaxed countryside cyclist, an Amsterdam cyclist, never a tour cyclist. 16 miles was the longest I had ever cycled in one day until 6 weeks ago.
Tomorrow I will travel to Pwllheli, in deepest north-west Wales to meet 12 other volunteers. We will be cycling the length and width of the country (over 350 miles) visiting schools, community groups and a green festival to discuss ideas about social justice: this year, specifically energy.
Up until now I haven’t dared to look at a topographic map….but I JUST DID!!!!!!! And now I feel a little sick!
Check this out: http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ncn/map/route/route-8 AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The reason I feel sick is because I am rubbish at cycling uphill. I initially thought it was the bike (ahem)….but after cycling up a few hills to Dover with a friend, I realised it was me. When I told him I was thinking about doing the tour, he laughed and said, “Are you crazy? You can't even get up this hill! Do not do it!"
Here I find myself, with one more sleep, listening to the rain fall and hoping that I find the strength to climb the mountains of Wales. I only have £145 left to raise for Otesha, the wonderful charity I’m doing this for so I’m asking for your support. Please give whatever you can afford to help me reach the total:
We will be updating the official Otesha blog, so you can follow our progress here:
And I will be in touch with news in 3 weeks, hopefully still walking...
Smiles, peace & bicycle grease
